Lake Victoria

This is Africa’s largest lake. It is shared by three East African countries, that is; Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. However it is shallow but provides large sums of fish to the residents of the above mentioned countries. Water levels in the lake rise and fall with seasonal rains. It also happens to be the source of the famous River Nile whose mouth is in Egypt. The islands on this lake include; Ssese Islands, Kome Islands, Busi Islands, Bulago Island etc.


Lake Albert

This lake is also known as Albert Nyanza formerly known as Lake Mobutu Sese Seko. It is Africa’s Seventh largest lake. It is about 160 km long and 30 km wide, with a maximum depth of 51 m (168 ft), and a surface elevation of 619 m (2,030 ft) above sea level. This lake is shared by Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Its main sources are Victoria Nile that flows from Lake Victoria and River Semliki.

Lake Kyoga

This is a large but shallow lake in Uganda. It has a ferry that makes transport easy to access the districts around the lake. Victoria Nile flows through this lake on its way from Lake Victoria to Lake Albert. It also provides fish to the Ugandans as over 40 fish species have been recorded in this lake.


Lake Katwe

This lake is famous in Uganda and the rest of East Africa for salt mining form back in the days till now. It is located in the small

town of Katwe in Kasese District. The water in the lake is approximately 60percent salty.


Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is located in the southern part of Uganda in Kabale District. It is the deepest lake in Uganda. http://bit.ly/zKGVxQ


Lakes George and Edward

These two lakes are joined by the Kazinga channel through which Lake George drains into Edward. The lakes are also known as Lake Dweru and Edward Nyanza respectively. Lake George covers a total surface area of 250square meters.  Lake Edward is the smallest of African great lakes
