Uganda,Kampala News Round Up: The Week That Was

10 February 2012

Description:

This week saw temperatures in Kampala drop and a cooler breeze has set in giving us all the hope that we need that it will soon rain sweet cold rain and we will not fry up.

The good news went on and we were informed that a new anti-retroviral (ARV) drug, Tenofovir is now being manufactured in Kampala by Quality Chemicals and it should be ready by March 2012. With the many deaths that mainly occur from failure to access drugs this comes as a great relief to the country and the African continent as a whole especially because the drug is  going to be much cheaper.

Also in this week’s news, Parliament’s first female clerk Ms Kibirige was sworn in. Prior to her appointment, Jane Kibirige was the Senior Deputy Academic Registrar at Mbarara University where she’d served in a number of positions. The Clerk to Parliament provides advice and guidance to the Speaker with respect to the rules, procedures and protocol of Parliament and directs the internal management of the Service.

In health news, the International Health Sciences University (IHSU) has opened a three-day medical camp to promote health through education and provide free medical services for the underprivileged community of Namuwongo, a Kampala suburb.
Around 80 medical experts and IHSU students were yesterday positioned at the camp to provide free medicines and counseling services.

To end the week in a good spirit, the government has come to the rescue of children in the north and put final touches on a Shs7 billion plan to fight nodding disease, an illness that has for long been mostly affecting children in Acholi sub-region. The ministry has promised to set up centres for screening and treating cases this month.

And for those who wish to unwind and have a relaxing weekend not forgetting the fun bit, then Afrikan Yoga in Kololo is a good place to start and then off to Cub Silk Industrial Area to dance the night away!

Enjoy your weekend people!
