Uganda to host Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference

29 March 2012

Description:

The 126 Inter- Parliamentary Union conference set for Kampala

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly is taking place at the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort on the outskirts of Uganda’s capital-Kampala, while other meetings will be held at Kampala Serena Hotel and Imperial Royale Hotel between 29 March to 5 April 2012.

The conference expects to gather over 200 participants including members of Parliament from Africa and beyond to discuss promoting and practicing good governance as a means of advancing peace and security, drawing lessons from recent events in the Middle East and North Africa. The conference will also look at the political problems in Syria to halt the bloodshed and killing in Syrians.

The main item on the agenda of the 126th assembly of the IPU will be access to health as a basic right and the role of Parliaments in addressing key challenges to securing the health of women and children.

The Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga is the chief host and the assembly will be officially opened by Mr. Yoweri Museveni -president of Uganda alongside IPU president- Mr. Abdul Wahid.

The IPU Assembly (formerly known as the Inter-Parliamentary Conference) is the principal statutory body that expresses the views of the Inter-Parliamentary Union on political issues. It brings together parliamentarians to study international problems and make recommendations for action.

Delegations attending IPU Assemblies customarily include members of parliament (MPs) from all political parties. The Assembly meets twice a year (in the spring and autumn) and is held each time in a different country, providing participants with an opportunity to see various national realities.

Statutory assemblies and conferences have been held since 1889 with the first conference in Paris (France) and the 125th in Bern (Switzerland) in 2011. The 126th Assembly will take place in Kampala (Uganda) and will be followed by the 127th Assembly in Quebec City (Canada), from 21-26 October 2012

The IPU assembly comes to Uganda at the time the country was voted the #1 top travel destination for 2012 by the world’s largest travel guide book and digital media publisher – Lonely Planet.
